Drink driver banned for seven years after mayhem
A DRUNK motorist who crashed a van through garden fences into a greenhouse has been disqualified from driving for seven years.
A male, 26, escaped jail when Sheriff Isobel Poole heard he had no previous convictions, but she ordered him to do 240 hours of community service.
Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard he was nearly three times over the legal drink limit when he damaged the fences 6.40pm on August 6.
Prosecutor Angie Main said the vehicle he was driving "demolished" one fence and "significantly damaged a greenhouse". He then drove off, hitting a parked car, reversed on to the pavement, hit another fence, some bushes and a wall, and narrowly missed a pedestrian.
At one point residents told him to stop where he was, but instead he apologised and continued driving. However, his car tyre eventually punctured and he was restrained by neighbours (that was me)until police arrived and arrested him shortly afterwards.
Defence agent Murray Robertson said: "This was a horrendous piece of driving.
"He himself describes it as the stupidest thing he has ever done. He could have been facing more serious charges if he had hit anyone."
Sheriff Poole also ordered him, to sit a driving test following his seven-year disqualification.
He had pleaded guilty to dangerous and drink driving, failing to stop, driving with a provisional licence only and without insurance
